TE Connectivity acquired the Potter and Brumfield product line from Siemens AG in the fall of 1999. Tyco acquired Siemens Electromechanical Components GmbH & Co. KG from Siemens for $1.1 billion. P&B was a unit of Siemens EC, which at the time had sales in excess of $800 million. Siemens' decision to sell off its electronic components business stemmed from a corporate initiative in November 1998 to create a sustainable ongoing improvement in their profitability through divesting its entire electronic-components segment. To Tyco Electronics, Siemens EC offered a broad product line that serves communications, consumer, industrial, and automotive markets. Potter & Brumfield's general-purpose relay operations, which include engineering, manufacturing, and marketing, were integrated into Tyco Electronics, and are run out of Tyco's Winston-Salem, N.C., plant. To TE Connectivity, the integration of the Potter & Brumfield product line was intended to improve manufacturing support and rapid improvement in available products, including medium power relays, power relays and signal relays.
