Honeywell

Honeywell International Inc was initially founded in 1906 by Mark Honeywell as Honeywell Heating Specialty Company in Wabash, Indiana, to manufacture and market his invention, the mercury seal generator. The company grew and with the acquisition of Jewell Manufacturing Company in 1922 to better automate his heating system, it began to clash with Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company. These two companies and formed and went public as Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company in 1927. Ranked 77th in the Fortune 500 in 2018, Honeywell is now a multinational conglomerate operating four business units: Honeywell Aerospace, Home and Building Technologies (HBT), Safety and Productivity Solutions (SPS) and Honeywell Performance Materials and Technology. The company makes aerospace systems, commercial and consumer products and offers engineering services and has over 130,000 employees throughout the world. Honeywell Inc. was acquired by Allied Signal in 1999, though due to the better name brand recognition, the new company was named Honeywell International Inc. Both companies were originally headquartered in New Jersey, but they moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 1,2019. Having survived the Depression, Honeywell really took off when the US military sought their assistance on engineering and manufacturing projects prior to the Second World War. In 1941, as Minneapolis-Honeywell they developed a leading tank periscope and camera stabilizers. Honeywell also developed the C-1 autopilot that revolutionized precision bombing and was eventually used in the two B-29s that dropped the atomic bombs that ended the war. Following that success, the company developed the controls for the first nuclear submarine, components used in various autopilot tech and some parts used in early space exploration. Honeywell has many brands that commercial and retail consumers may recognize, including its line of home thermostats (particularly the iconic round type) and Garrett turbochargers. In addition to consumer home products, Honeywell produces thermostats, sensors, security alarm systems, and air cleaners and dehumidifiers. The company also licenses its brand name for use in various retail products made by other manufacturers, including air conditioners, heaters, fans, security safes, home generators, and paper shredders. Through most of the 1960s, Honeywell was one of the "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" of computing. IBM was "Snow White", while the dwarfs were the seven significantly smaller computer companies: Burroughs, Control Data Corporation, General Electric, Honeywell, NCR, RCA, and UNIVAC. With more than 50,000 products ranging from snap action, limit, toggle and pressure switches to position, speed and airflow sensors, Honeywell has a product to meet any industry’s requirements, any company’s needs. They bring to bear engineering expertise and value-added capabilities no other company offers. Their switch and sensor solutions meet a wide array of basic and complex applications in the industries of Industrial, Aerospace and Defense, Transportation, Medical, and Test and Measurement.
