SIA Reports June and Q2 Sales Increase

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has reported sales in the semiconductor industry increased in June. Year over year, SIA reported a 5.1% increase in sales in Q2, though was a slight decline of 0.3% compared to May.

The numbers also showed Q2 2020 was down against Q1. “Second-quarter semiconductor sales were roughly flat compared to the first quarter, and the global industry continues to post year-to-year sales increases, but significant uncertainty remains for the second half of the year due to ongoing macroeconomic headwinds,” says SIA CEO John Neuffer, “sales into the Americas stood out in June, increasing nearly 30 percent year-to-year.”

Worldwide sales of semiconductors were $34.5 billion in June 2020 versus the June 2019 total of $32.9 billion. Sales during the second quarter of 2020 were $103.6 billion, 5.1%  more than the second quarter of 2019, but a small decrease of 0.9% compared to the first quarter of 2020. Monthly sales are compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization and represent a three-month moving average. SIA represents 95 percent of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue and nearly two-thirds of non-U.S. chip firms.

“Our country’s leadership in semiconductors is a big reason America has the world’s largest economy and most advanced technologies. The U.S. industry, however, faces a range of challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, rising cost of innovation, declining share of global manufacturing, and geopolitical instability,” the SIA site states.
