Engineers Start Know Your Worth

Over the Valentine’s Day weekend, an engineer started a tweet conversation around salary transparency in the engineering industry. It became a trending topic on Twitter and soon had spun off a site dedicated to capturing the information.

Slack developer Zac Sweers used his Twitter account - @ZacSweers - to post his salary, education and working years and location.

Hundreds of engineers from all over the world became involved, posting their own information and starting a conversation on pay inequity and other related conversations.

Interestingly, the salaries make the idea of being an engineer very attractive. “A lot of people showed vulnerability in sharing, and a lot more praised and encouraged them. Whether it was likes, retweets, comments of encouragement, or connections between folks to learn about others' journeys. It was amazing to read,” Sweers noted.

Smartly, someone started collecting and filtering the tweets and used GitHub to store the gathered data. So you can use the gathered information to determine best cities to move to when you have graduated with that engineering degree. International information is of interest, and the fact that most of the engineers were white males (not very surprising but something that is changing rapidly - the aggregator was an Indian engineer).
