Schaffner has introduced a series of IEC connectors specifically designed for medical equipment to assist with MOPP (means of patient protection) safety precautions. IEC connectors meet International Electrotechnical Commission standards and are used to connect an electronic appliance to its power source.
Called FN9274, Schaffner designed the connectors to meet Class II medical equipment standard IEC / EN 60601-1.
“The enclosure is plastic for higher dielectric strength insulation and C18 inlet receptacles do not have an earth pin – the input is also physically compatible with the company’s C17 V-Lock locking power cords to avoid accidental disconnection of power,” Electronics Weekly noted.

Front panel mount, rear panel mount and snap-in fit mounting configurations are available with two termination styles for each mounting configuration: fast-on connectors or wire leads.
With creepage/clearance of 8mm/5mm and double insulation, these connectrors are rated to 4kVac. Rating is 250Vac 50/60Hz up to 15A continuous.
Schaffer reports the connectors fulfill the requirements for:
Two MOPP in IEC 60601-1 – medical
IEC/EN 62368-1 – audio, video, information and communication
IEC/EN 60950-1 – information technology
IEC/EN 60335-1 – household
Reinforced Insulation in IEC 61010-1 – Safety requirements
RoHS and REACH regulation
All are certified according to UL/IEC 60939-3, C22.2 No. 8. CQC/CCC GB/T15287 and GB/T15288. The company sees them used for “general medical devices (MDD), in-vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDD) and intensive care, as well as equipment for test, measurement, audio, video and communication”.
